World Environment Day

World Environment Day is one of the biggest annual events organised by the United Nations to generate awareness about the significance of nature and greenery. It is celebrated on June 5 every year to remind people about the importance of nature. The theme for World Environment Day 2021 is ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ & Pakistan will be the global host for the big day. In 2020, the theme was ‘Celebrate Biodiversity’.

What is Ecosystem Restoration? We often talk about Ecosystem & Restoration but do we really know what it means?

a. Ecosystem Restoration means assisting in the recovery of Ecosystem that has been destroyed.

b. It also includes conservation of the Ecosystem that is fragile.

c. Ecosystem can be restored in many ways like planting trees, one of the easiest & best ways.

Environment also depends on handling and management of waste materials. Disposing of waste has huge environmental impact and can cause serious problems. Some waste will gradually rot, but not all, and in the process it may smell or generate methane gas, which is explosive & contributes to the green house effect.

Some of the devastating effects of today’s poor waste management systems are: soil contamination, water contamination, extreme weathers caused by climate changed, air contamination, harms towards animals and marine life, human damage.

Education and awareness in the area of waste & waste management is. Increasingly important from a global perspective of resource management.

The global outbreak of the deadly Corona Virus has affected human life & daily activities, but it has improved the air quality & reduced water pollution with most of the cities under lockdown, there has been a significant reduction in carbon emissions which has restored the Ecological System.

But the disposal of medicine waste like disinfectants, masks, gloves & the burden of untreated waste have also increased during the pandemic.

It is a concern, once the situation bounces back to normal, the environment start suffering again. Long term goals & proper implementation of strategies and politics are the need of the hour for global sustainability.

To conclude here are some meaningful quotes on Environment Day.

‘The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it’----Robert Swan.

‘A nature that destroys its soil destroys itself’ – Franklin D Roosevelt.
